The app Gieß den Kiez enables committed citizens to find out about the trees in their area and their water needs, and to take action themselves. Entering their watering schedule will help the thirsty city trees and enable the engaged neighborhood to coordinate and connect with each other.
Gieß den Kiez is an open-source project and can therefore be independently adapted by any city. However, the technical implementation and building of a watering community pose some challenges. But rest assured! The team at Technologiestiftung Berlin – drawing on many years of experience with administration, civil society, nature organisations, and municipalities – will support you in implementing Gieß den Kiez in your own neighborhood!
As the name suggests, open-source projects can be implemented independently. We have summarized the process in this guide and provided technical documentation in this document.

The app visualizes the urban tree population, and the specific water needs of the trees. This allows committed watering communities to see at a glance which trees require how much water and to record their watering directly. This will simplify the coordination and administration of watering within the neighborhood.
Urban trees are increasingly suffering from changing climate conditions, while water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource. This situation poses growing challenges for the responsible authorities. However, engaged citizens are eager to get involved, and some are already actively doing so. The app not only enables transparent participation but also motivates people to take collective action to help city trees. Since the launch of the app in Berlin alone, more than two million liters of water have been voluntarily watered (as of June 2024).
Since the project was launched four years ago, our team has already advised several cities on their own implementation. With Deine Stadt Gießt, we now officially offer full service to comprehensively support cities and municipalities in implementing the watering app. All we need is the city's tree data (tree register). We handle the technical setup and enable individual configuration (logo, FAQ, legal notice, etc.). The app's operation, including everything related to updates and support, as well as costs for external services are included for the first year. Does your city also want individual features or a unique design? Feel free to discuss it with us!
In the project overview we have summarized all information about the project progress and the features. If you have any further questions about the project or your own implementation, please feel free to write us an E-mail or directly schedule a meeting.
Book a meeting now and together we will figure out how to implement the app for your city!
